Wonthaggi is a town in the Gippsland region of Victoria, Australia. Melbourne lies about 130 km to the north-west, close enough for day trips. Originally it was a coal-mining town but since the mine closed in the late Sixties, cattle farming and tourism took over as the main industries.
While Wonthaggi's past is all about coal, a non-renewable source of energy, its present is all about clean, renewable energy. For example, it's the site of the Wonthaggi Wind Farm where wind turbines are generating energy to provide power to, among others, the Wonthaggi Desalination Plant. The town also hosts the annual Wonthaggi Energy Innovation Festival where one of the main attractions is the Human Powered Grand Prix. This event takes place in March and involves students racing one another in human-powered pushcarts.
State Coal Mine Heritage Area - The only facility of its kind in the Southern Hemisphere, the State Coal Mine Heritage Area is a living-history museum that takes you back to the days when Wonthaggi was a mining town. You can explore the historic buildings and watch educational films in the Visitor Centre to find out more about how a coal mine operates. However, the real fun is in the underground tour, where you get to wear a hard hat and get your hands dirty at the coal face.
Wonthaggi Wetlands Conservation Park - Only minutes away from the town centre you'll find the Wonthaggi Wetlands Conservation Park. This is the perfect spot for a stroll along the boardwalks to watch the birds that visit the lakes.
Bass Coast Rail Trail - If you're feeling active and in the mood for the great outdoors, you'll love the Bass Coast Rail Trail. A disused railway line was converted into a path that stretches over 16 km of farmland and dunes along the coast between Wonthaggi and Anderson. You can cycle, walk or navigate the trail on horseback, enjoying the spectacular scenery along the way.
Cape Paterson - Only 8 km south of Wonthaggi is the small beachside community of Cape Paterson. This is a great place for camping, fishing and scuba diving. This being a beach town in Australia, naturally you won't want to miss the opportunity to try the surf breaks here too. The great thing about Cape Paterson is that it's somewhat off the beaten track so you won't have to compete with hordes of other holidaymakers for a spot on the beach.
Bunurong Marine Park - For incredible marine diversity, don't miss the Bunurong Marine Park along the coastline between Cape Paterson and Inverloch. Don some goggles and a snorkel to explore the rock pools along the ragged coastline or practise your scuba-diving skills. Otherwise, rent a boat and see if you can spot some whales offshore. This stretch of coastline is millions of years old and if you're lucky and know what to look for, you may discover the bones of some prehistoric animals.
Maru Koala and Animal Park - On the road northwards to Grantville, just over 30 km from Wonthaggi, you'll find the Maru Koala and Animal Park. This is definitely one for the kids: They can hand feed the koalas and pet them. The park also houses other Australian animals like dingoes, wombats, Tasmanian devils, a variety of bird species and a crocodile. There is also a pirate-themed mini-golf and adventure course.
