Located just 140 km southeast of Melbourne, Phillip Island is a great getaway from the city. The island is not large, boasting only 100 square kilometres in area, and the permanent residents are largely engaged in sheep and cattle farming. The bucolic nature of the main industry doesn't subtract from the beauty of the island, or from its attractiveness as a holiday destination. Surfers from all points of the compass flock here to find some of the most dependable surf breaks in the country, (including one of the most popular surf beaches in Australia at Cape Woolamai), while the island's geography makes it a natural draw for beachcombers of every stripe. Wildlife lovers will adore Phillip Island- it's home to many birds including large flocks of Mutton Birds and Shearwaters and the flora and fauna is diverse and beautiful.

Phillip Island is not only a great place to catch some waves, but also a place to catch a glimpse of a pair of today's up-and-coming movie stars. Things to See and Do in and Around Phillip Island
The Towns: The towns on Phillip Island all offer something interesting. Cowes is the busy main town complete with fishing quay and the Phillip Island Museum. San Remo is a traditional fishing village with terrific seafood restaurants and some lovely handicraft shops. Newhaven is picturesque and the ideal place to arrange a trip over to small Churchill Island. Kids will love a visit to the chocolate factory. Rhyll enjoys a glorious natural setting and is home to a Koala Sanctuary. The inlet's mangrove forest is much favoured by nature-loving visitors.
Grand Prix Circuit: Motor racing has been part of the Phillip Island experience since 1928. At that time, the regular streets through the island were the racecourse, and part of the first Australian Grand Prix. Since 1956, the sport has been housed at the Grand Prix Circuit. A variety of major events have been held here - The Phillip Island 500k Endurance Race (1971-1977), 1he 1989 World Motorcycle Championship, and the 1990 World Superbike.
Rhyll Trout & Bush Tucker Farm: For a truly interactive dining experience, visit the Rhyll Trout & Bush Tucker Farm. The farm works to educate visitors on where their food is sourced. A bush walk has been established to show native edible plants, and there are two lakes onsite for fishing. All necessary equipment is provided, and new anglers can easily receive assistance as needed. The indoor lake is intended to provide a faster and easier catch, while the outdoor lake can be more challenging. Once you've landed your catch, the farm's staff will prepare it on the spot to your liking, or they can package it for you to take away.
Phillip Island Vineyard & Winery: Australia produces some of the world's finest wines, and fortunately some acreage on Phillip Island has been devoted to the grape as well. The Phillip Island Vineyard & Winery produces a wide variety of wines including Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Shiraz, Cabernet Merlot, and Riesling. Enjoy a light lunch in their cosy cellar door, with tastes of local produce including Australian cheeses and smoked trout, or a heartier ploughman's lunch to get you into the rest of your day.
Penguin Parade: The Phillip Island beaches are home to one of the largest colonies of Little Penguins. Each night at sunset, the penguins march out of the waves and back to their burrows in the sands of the beach. The Parade area has a series of boardwalks leading the viewing areas for the nightly spectacle, and a range of seating options to make your wait more comfortable. Be warned - it can get chilly on the beach at night, and your proximity to the water means there's a chance of ocean spray. Once the penguins come ashore, you'll find it was worth it.
