Martial Art - we practice traditional Iwama style Aikido. A class will typically include weapons practice with the Japanese training sword (bokken); short staff (jo); plus a range of open handed techniques that cover joint locks, holds, and throws.

Aikido is a Japanese martial art commonly known as the 'way of harmonious spirit' or the 'art of peace and harmony'. Aikido ​employs fluid motion combined with shapes that are often found in nature to overcome superior strength and aggression. It's technical repertoire consists of powerful locking and pinning techniques and dynamic throws.
Aikido is often called a martial art by many practitioners of aikido and other martial arts, but it is also referred to as Budo:
Saito Sensei says, "...It is Budo. The purpose is not only to make you physically stronger but also to make you mentally stronger. Aikido's goals are achieved though keiko. By constantly testing and pushing your limits further and further. But, in order to push that limit we have to train at the limit. Not above it."
There are many styles of martial arts, and many schools that practice different styles of Aikido; many share a similar philosophy and approach to self defence and training. However, Aikido's fundamental mindset of non-resistance and harmonising (or blending) with oncoming aggression to be able to deal with it safely is unique in comparison to other martial arts.
