WOMEN MOVING THE WORLD
Two friends had foresight 5 years ago and put their hands up to enquire about a franchise with Allied Pickford's Removal Company. With a combined 47 years experience and expert knowledge of the removal industry, their beloved company had no hesitation in offering Lucia and Helen the Gladstone Franchise. Thus, five years ago, they began a new career path as two women in a rather male dominated industry.
When the girls began the franchise journey, they took the initiative and both sat for and attained Forklift licences. Lucia also bit the bullet and decided to sit for her HR Licence which she now holds with great pride and shows off to anyone that will listen, and those that won't! Helen and Lucia are also hands on Managers and when times get tough the tough get going, and there they are, out packing homes, loading furniture, driving trucks, and loading containers.
Best things about the removal industry:-
I have always aspired to own and succeed in my own business. This is one dream that is still in the making and I am very much enjoying. That the business just happens to be a furniture removal franchise is an added bonus.
I never had any aspirations to own a business, but now I am in the midst of the business sector, I am loving every minute of it. I was the manager at the Gladstone branch for a short while before taking over the franchise and one of my funniest moments was when I had a staff member come and query his wages for driving a HR truck. He said "Lucia, if I get X amount of dollars for driving a truck, what would I get for pulling a dog?" My answer, "A jail sentence". It took him a few seconds!
Helen and Lucia-:
The girls say that the best thing to come out of the Furniture Removals industry is the friendship that they have forged.
Worst things about the removal industry:-
As we work in a mining area, finding staff is extremely difficult. It is a ongoing problem which is not about to change any time soon.
We have had some problems but on the whole it has been a blast working in this industry. I have met some of the most amazing people, both customers and peers. I have heard some of the funniest stories, which should be written in a book and kept for posterity. OMG!
What changes would you make to the industry :-
Helen and Lucia:
To make furniture removals a recognised trade, and provide traineeships within the removals sector. This is a very skilled job, and the staff employed in positions such as packing, loading etc need to be recognised for their expertise.
Going out for dinner and sharing a few rums and a good laugh. Golf is another passion that I embrace. Gardening. (Excerpt from Lucia) "Helen loves gardening! Helen's gardening is done sitting on the balcony while Tim is doing all the chopping, lopping and weeding."
My family factor very highly in all I do, but mostly riding my Harley and laughing. Food of life!
Travel lots and improve the golf score.
At my age, just happy to keep breathing.
5-10 Years from now:-
Helen and Lucia:-
Finish with the franchise business in 5 years and then look out Europe! Helen and Lucia and their respective partners have promised themselves a trip to Italy. Bon Giorno, Arriverdeci, Ciao and all that business. And wine! Lots of wine!
Helen and Lucia would like to thank Allied Pickfords for the opportunity they provided, and for the support of one of the best companies in the Furniture Removals Industry.
