Thoughts of visiting Australia are inevitably linked to daydreams of sparkling white sandy beaches, pristine waters for every pursuit, and surf breaks to match all skill levels. No doubt that Australia's beaches and waterways are par excellence, but there's a lot more to the continent that just that gorgeous perimeter.
Alice Springs, in the Northern Territory, is a shining example of the rest of Australia. You can't get much more centralized, as the city sits nearly in the middle of the continent. You also can't get too much farther from watersports, with the nearest beaches about 1500 kilometers away. The city has done quite well in spite of its dry surroundings. With major settlement beginning in 1887, Alice Springs is proof that Australians can prosper in all the natural conditions of the inland desert climate.
One of the most interesting facts about Alice Springs is the dedication to enjoyment and activities that have wide participation. The city is the home to world's one and only dry river regatta, the Henley-on-Todd Regatta. What likely began as a joke towards the formality of British regatta events has now become a staple event of the Alice Springs annual calendar. Teams create bottomless "boats" in the shape of bathtubs, rowboats, or even yachts, and then carry them on foot through the dry bed of the Todd River. On one occasion, unexpected rains caused the river to actually contain water, leading to the cancellation of the foot race. This all led to another unique achievement for Alice Springs - it is the home of the only regatta to ever be cancelled due to having water in the river!
Four Legged Racing - The unusual quickly become usual in Alice Springs. Consider also the annual racing schedule in nearby Blatherskite Park. Of course, horse racing is a longstanding tradition across Australia, so having a racecourse is not so interesting. Where it becomes an attraction is the annual Camel Cup, where camels replace horses for a full day of racing events on the second Saturday of each July. With rickshaw races and belly dancers and more interspersed between 9 separate racing events, it is a full day of family fun.
Four Wheel Racing - For the hardcore motorhead in the family, Alice Springs can be a dream vacation. Start off slowly by visiting the Alice Springs Inland Dragway for regular drag racing events, and then be sure to put on your calendar the annual Tatts Finke Desert Race. Similar to the world-famous Dakar rally, the Finke race is a two-day event with cars, trucks, motorcycles, and quads racing from Alice Springs to Finke and back, nearly 500 km over all kinds of terrain.
Art Appreciation - Art aficionados won't leave Alice Springs disappointed either. The city is the acknowledged Aboriginal art capital of Australia, and there are many galleries in the shopping center of Todd Mall. Each September, Alice Springs hosts the annual Desert Mob Art Show, with Aboriginal art from across the nation featured.
Spectator Sports - Sports fans can get their fix in Alice Springs too. Australian Rugby League matches are held at ANZAC oval, home to the Central Australian Rugby Union and the Central Australian Rugby League. Nearby Traeger Park hosts Australian Rules football matches as well as cricket matches, with a seating capacity for 10,000 spectators.
Animal Encounters - The Alice Springs Reptile Centre is the chance to get up close and personal with things that slide, slither and hiss in their natural environment. Over 100 types of reptiles have a home here including crocs, geckos, goannas and taipan snakes.
Nature at its best - Alice Springs is flanked by the MacDonnell Ranges and the mountains and flatlands provide wonderful bush walking (especially the Larapinta Trail) and wildlife and bird viewing. A favourite of tourist activities is hot air balloon trips over the area. Finke Gorge National Park is a popular destination as are lush Palm Valley and Rainbow Valley in the Simpson Desert.
Australia's beaches are fantastic, but the interior is the place to be. Alice Springs, in the Northern Territory, offers much more for the entire family.
