Newcastle is Australia's 7th largest city and is a fascinating choice for visitors. It has a unique feel to it because it is a seemingly incongruous mash of industry with seaside tourism. Newcastle is a huge and busy port but also boasts some stunningly beautiful beaches and a very attractive coastline. When a city centre is surrounded by eight beaches, you are guaranteed not only a great seaside holiday but one that is also full of the usual urban pursuits such as going to the cinema, theatre, shopping and eating out, without having to travel far to do so.
Newcastle is only 162kms from Sydney and is served by excellent transport links, so fitting in two great cities of New South Wales in one trip is entirely achievable.
Newcastle also enjoys an enviable location in the Hunter Valley, a very picturesque region famed for its wineries, so it is very easy to escape the urban landscape, and eschew the beaches in favour of a day out in beautiful countryside, just minutes from the city.
The beaches - Each of Newcastle's beaches has its own unique feel and they are all linked by the Bather's Way Coastal Walk. The surfing is good here, which means beaches are patrolled and safe swimming is in marked out sections. Some of the beaches have rock pools which are great for the kids, and most have changing facilities, cafes, kiosks and barbecue areas. There's also the Bogey Hole if you fancy a swim without needing to get sand between your toes.
Ocean Baths - Newcastle boasts two ocean swimming pools. The largest of its kind in the Southern Hemisphere is located right on Merewether Beach, and the smaller is at Newcastle Beach.
Bather's Way Walk - At normal pace it takes 2 hours to walk the 5km path that stretches from the lighthouse at Nobby's Headland to the Glenrock Reserve at Burwood Beach. It is a heritage walk, and along the way are yellow plaques telling the stories of Newcastle.
Newcastle East Heritage Walk - Take a fascinating wander through the area first established as the city of Newcastle 200 years ago. The walk includes the Customs House, Fort Scratchley, Christchurch Cathedral and various convict era buildings including the Convict Lumber Yard.
Art - A number of galleries present collections of global (Newcastle Art Gallery) local and Aboriginal (The Outback) art.
Museums - The Newcastle Museum showcases the history of the city, whilst the Maritime Centre focuses on the relationship with the sea and its link to the city's growth and economic well-being. Another interesting venue is the Lock Up - a converted police station, now a cultural centre that includes a small museum dedicated to Newcastle's penal history.
Nature Attractions - For lovers of wildlife, nature and the great outdoors, there's more than enough to satisfy. Between them, Blackbutt Reserve, Glenrock State Conservation Area, Blue Gum Hills Regional Park, Stockton Sand Dunes, Kooragang Wetlands and the Hunter Wetlands Centre provide a mass of opportunities for wildlife viewing, interacting with nature and enjoying exciting outdoor activities.
Darby Street (Cooks Hill) - Interesting bohemian district with a vibrant cafe culture, boutique shops and galleries.
The Junction - Great destination for upmarket shopping and fine dining.
Beaumont Street (Hamilton) - A Mediterranean enclave with sidewalk cafes and a vibrant pub scene.
