The Maitland Gaol is one of the most popular attractions in Maitland, with a fascinating history that sweeps over 150 years. The cells were once host to Australia's most hardened and vicious criminals until it closed its doors in 1998. A fascinating tour is offered every day of the week as well as torch light tours at night. If you really want to experience life in gaol, you can grab a sleeping bag and join them for sleepover night. The gaol is also home to the annual Bitter and Twisted Beer Festival.
The Maitland Market has a whopping 600 plus stalls of home bakes, crafts, gourmet food, art work, musicians, home industry - you name it, it is there. Taking locals and visitors right back to a time when shopping was done this way every day, you can literally buy everything here from cake to dining room tables. Make sure you leave your diet at home for this one, you can buy a bench to sit on, if you need to lie down after sampling all the goodies.
Maitland Showground - It's always worth visitors to Maitland checking out the schedule for the showground as there's an interesting calendar of events. Permanent dates include Groovin' the Moo music Festival and the Maitland Agricultural Show.
The Wyndham Estate is located right on the banks of the sparkling Hunter River. Just a few minutes out of the heart of the city brings you to this famous and award winning wine estate, where you can relax, sample some of the finest award winning wines, enjoy lunch under the leafy shade at the outdoor cafe, or inside underneath the air conditioning. Alternatively, gather the family and chill out on the banks of the river with a good old fashioned BBQ.
St Peters Anglican Church is an unfinished church - its spire and tower were never built - is one of the oldest in all of Australia. It's a gothic styled church with roots dating back as far as the 14th century. There is an astounding collection of beautiful furniture and artistic artefacts including a Henry Willis pipe organ and really stunning stained glass windows as well as the lectern and the pulpit. A must see for any visitor coming to Maitland.
