Kogarah is a South Sydney suburb in the heart of the St. George area and features a rich and potent mix of architectural beauty in its historical buildings and enticing and eye-catching modern events. Just a few kilometres from Sydney's central business district, this urban hub has lovely green and tranquil spaces.
The main feature of Kogarah has to be its abundance of public art - there's a great diversity to the installations from statuary to murals - and the best thing - it's all free to visit at any time.
With this much interest in one area, you can't not pay a visit to Kogarah!
Renowned journalist, broadcaster, writer and television presenter, Clive James was brought up in Kogarah.
St. Patrick's Catholic Church - On the Princes Highway this working church is one of Kogarah's major sites. European visitors in particular will notice the gothic architectural style prominent in the 19th century. Architects Hennessy and Sheerin designed the church way back in 1888.
Kogarah Water Feature - Visit the town square and the water feature which runs the length of the square is bound to stick out. Water ejects from three main fountains and cascades down drains and terraces. It spirals into the grasses to complete this little slice of Zen. It's the perfect place to relax and be alone with your thoughts. This feature was installed as a memorial to Australian workers who were injured in the workplace.
Kogarah Bay - Whilst not strictly still in Kogarah since the partitioning of the St. George's area, it still retains its name. View the bay from the Claydon Reserve at Sans Souci and watch as the sunset descends over the horizon.
Kogarah's Public Art - Surely, one of the best 'collections' of art in the public domain anywhere. Streets, squares and buildings are liberally sprinkled with a seriously eclectic mix of statues, sculptures and paintings. On a trip round town you can see a Bruce Lee statue (!), a Jimi Hendrix wall scene, various water features and more than a few murals.
Kogarah School of Arts - On the corner of Queens Avenue and Bowns Road is this theatre and meeting hall built in the Victorian Italianate architectural style in 1887. From a distance it looks like a building made from gold. Go in for a closer look and see a show, or attend one of the many concerts featuring bands from all over Australia.
The Monetarium - Most of the houses and shops built in the old Australian style have vanished. This shop on the Princes Highway retains its character and traditional charm. Doubling as both a commercial unit and residential flats, it's an example of Kogarah's colourful past. Visitors interested in numismatics can visit the Monetarium within and barter for some rare Australian coins and banknotes.
