How does NDIS work in Australia?
The NDIS is a government-funded scheme that provides funding for people with permanent and significant disabilities in Australia. It aims to provide individuals with more choice and control over their disability support needs and also increase participation in the community. The NDIS is managed by the NDIA (National Disability Insurance Agency) and oversighted by the NDIS Quality and Safeguards Commission (NDIS Commission).
What types of support are funded?
NDIS, or the National Disability Insurance Scheme, provides participants with various supports to help them lead independent and fulfilling lives. These include assistance with daily personal activities, as well as help with transport for participating in community and daily life events.
NDIS also provides workplace support to help both unemployed and employed participants successfully get or keep jobs in the open or supported labour force.
Furthermore, NDIS provides therapeutic and behavioural support, assistance with household tasks, skilled help to use aids and equipment, home modifications and construction services, mobility equipment options, and vehicle modifications.
NDIS ensures all participants have access to the vital support they need to enjoy richly rewarding lives.
The NDIS cannot provide or cover certain kinds of assistance
The NDIS is an important support system for Australians living with a disability, but it's important to note that there are some kinds of support that the NDIS cannot fund or provide. The NDIS Act and the rules made under the NDIS Act make it clear what these exclusions are. These include supports that are the responsibility of another government system or community service, those not related to a person's disability, those relating to day-to-day living costs not related to their support needs, and those likely to cause harm or pose a risk to others. Therefore, individuals and families need to understand which types of support are funded by NDIS so they can find the best option for them.
