Greek Theatre Lecture Series

Making Sense of Greek Theatre
6.00 – 7.00pm Monday, 13 February 2012
This session introduces Greek theatre, exploring questions such as: How were plays staged in ancient Greece? How did Greek theatre emerge? and What sort of effect did the playwrights hope to achieve? The session will examine both what Greek theatre has in common with modern theatre and also how it differs. We will examine topics that often seem confusing to a modern reader, such as the mythic background of plays and the use of the chorus. By the end of the session, participants will have a better appreciation of Greek theatre and a better awareness of how ancient Greeks understood theatre.

Greek Tragedy: The Complexities of Oedipus
6.00 – 7.00pm Monday 20 February 2012
Combining a powerful story with expert story-telling, Sophocles’ Oedipus Rex is considered a masterpiece by many modern writers. In antiquity, it was used by Aristotle as an example of good Greek tragedy. Through a close examination of the text, this session will examine the story line of this famous play, and see how the playwright builds and resolves the drama. The play will be used as an example to illustrate the pattern of Greek tragedies in general as we try to understand this compelling and entertaining genre.

Greek Comedy: Poking Fun at Intellectuals

Aristophanes’ play The Clouds makes fun of the leading intellectuals of the day (Socrates and the Sophists) through a mix of intellectual parody and crude jokes that is typical of Aristophanes’ plays. This seminar will examine the play in its historical and social context to understand what the author was poking fun at and how. Using the play as an example of early Greek comedy, we will examine what sort of humour appealed to the audience of the day. We will also explore how comedy in ancient Athens served a deeper purpose, being used as a means of social commentary.
