A Guide to Moorabbin
South East of, and 15 kilometres away from Melbourne's CBD, Moorabbin is a busy residential suburb of one of Australia's most vibrant cities. Whilst all the sights and sounds of Melbourne are within arm's reach, Moorabbin has its own charms. It has a busy regional airport which also operates a flying school, large shopping areas and malls, and plenty of entertainment venues. Although the post office was established in Moorabbin in 1857, today the suburb is mainly residential buildings from the 1960s and 70s, and quite distinctively and predominantly, built of cream or red brick.

Moorabbin Air Museum - Get two experiences in one at the oldest volunteer aviation museum in Australia. Not only does the endearing museum have an interesting collection of airplanes through the ages, but its location at Moorabbin Airport means flying buffs also get to watch planes landing and taking off.
The Steam Locomotive Society of Victoria - Based in Moorabbin, the society is one of a group of many miniature railways in Melbourne. It is open for public viewing and rides on the 1st Sunday of every month, except January.
Karkarook Park - Located in neighbouring suburb Heatherton, the park is a man-made wetland and a haven for birds. There's a beautiful artificial lake at its heart, and the very well landscaped areas include a walking trail. Fishing is permitted (although discouraged and restricted), there are plenty of picnic spots, and a kids playground. Birdwatchers are usually more than satisfied by the abundance of waterfowl and birdlife to be seen in the park.
Little Devil's Circus - It can sometimes be difficult to know how to keep little ones amused all holiday. At Moorabbin, you can enrol them in a few circus classes. Leave them in the capable hands of skilled tutors, and enjoy some quality adult time.
DFO - Direct Factory Outlets is a major retail chain in various locations throughout Melbourne. The large shopping complex right next to Moorabbin Airport is definitely the place to head for holiday bargains.
Kingston Heath Reserve - Very large playground for the kids, with a free, shaded BBQ area, water tap and toilet block.
Golf - If you like to play a round or two, there are 3 excellent golf courses all within a few kilometres of Moorabbin - Capital Golf Course, Kingswood Golf Club and Kingston Heath Golf Club.
The Beach - Moorabbin is the ideal location if you want to stay in a suburb with easy access to the beach. Melbourne has many fine beaches - the famed St. Kilda is a short drive, but the closest is at Beaumaris, a safe, sandy bay ideal for catching some rays and a spot of swimming that is also popular for its boating activities.
Helicopter Flight - If you have ever wondered what it is like to fly a helicopter, half hour trial flights are available at the airport. You will actually be in control of the helicopter for 15 minutes, so if you've ever dreamed of being a pilot, this is the adventure for you.
The Chandelier Room - Specialising in acoustic acts, the venue is one of the hippest entertainment centres in Moorabbin.
