These sectors of the economy have diminished as employers over time with less employment occurring as these industries have either been removed or are now largely automated requiring few people to run the plant and equipment.
Tourism has been one sector with positive growth. Businesses such as creative paper have opened their doors with papermaking tours available where visitors can make their own paper.
Burnie is surrounded by many towns with a short drive to the east revealing the small town of Penguin and further along Bass Highway reaching the town of Ulverstone. A few minutes drive to the West of Burnie is Cooee which is noted for a large number of car dealerships.
