Adelaide has the distinction of being one of the few Australian cities actually planned and set out in order, rather than simply growing from a higgledy-piggledy assortment of canvas shelters or bark huts hastily constructed during a gold rush. It was architect George Strickland Kingston who had the honour of designing Adelaide - but Colonel William Light choose the location and laid the city out, near to the River Torrens. Due to his foresight in designing wider road and streets, Adelaide was able to grow to its present size without needing major changes in its design.
Adelaide is the fifth largest city in Australia, but the largest in South Australia and is the states capital. In the past its economic development has been hindered not only be incompetent leadership but drought, as much of the earlier prosperity depended on the primary produce of surrounding farms.
However, the wars brought with them increasing diversification into industry and manufacturing which reduced its dependence on primary industry. These days there are many thriving industries, businesses and farms in and around Adelaide. Adelaide is famed for its many festivals that include the Adelaide Festival of Arts, Fringe Festival, Cabaret Festival, Film Festival, Writers Week, WOMADelaide, Tasting Australia and many others.
