Wollongong, known to many locals as 'the Gong', is the third largest city in NSW after Sydney and Newcastle, with a population of approximately 182,000 people. Only 82 kilometres (approximately a 1 hour drive) from Sydney, it is an ideal location as it has all the benefits of a smaller town, such as less traffic congestion, but is also close to the largest city in NSW for convenience. Some people choose to live in Wollongong and work in Sydney, however this is becoming less ideal due to the significant rise in petrol prices.
Wollongong has coastal temperatures ranging from an average of 17 degrees Celsius in winter, to 26 degrees Celsius in summer. Therefore, the temperatures are fairly comfortable and encourage outdoor activities, such as fishing. In fact, Wollongong is a major centre for the South Coast fishing industry.
Other large industries which have dominated Wollongong are the mining and industry sectors, as this town contains coal mines, steelworks and an industrial port. It also has a University, the University of Wollongong, and brings in a large number of international students every year.
Suburbs of Wollongong include Keiraville, which is located in the region of Illawarra. Next to Keiraville is Gwynneville, and both are known as University towns due to The University of Wollongong being located in this region. Mangerton and Coniston are also major suburbs of Wollongong.
