Tamworth, also known as 'The Country Music Capital', is home to a population of approximately 45,000 people with about 55,000 people in the surrounding district. This makes it a major regional centre in NSW. Located midway between Brisbane and Sydney, it is well-known for its annual Country Music Festival in January, which attracts thousands of tourists to the town every year. Tamworth also attracts a number of people from smaller towns in the surrounding area such as Quirindi, Inverell, Gunnedah and Moree. It has been estimated that 100,000 people attend this music fesival, with 70,000 staying for the entire 10 day period, with camping offered along the banks of the Peel River.
The Tamworth climate is fairly hot in summer, averaging a maximum temperature of 34 degrees Celsius in the day and approximately 20 degrees Celsius at night. In winter, the average temperature in the day is 18 degrees and approximately 3 degrees Celsius at night. This differs greatly from neighbouring towns such as Uralla and Armidale (approximately 1 and a half hours away), where temperatures only exceed 30 degrees Celsius about 13 times per year.
Peel Street is the primary site for the Central Business district in Tamworth, with hundreds of shops and an abundance of restaurants and cafes lining this main street. Major shopping centres include Tamworth City Plaza, Tamworth Shopping World and Centrepoint Shopping Centre.
